Ancient HORRAON
Epirus! Fourth Century BCE!

The HORRAON Olive Grove is located on the bedrock of a small hill, at the top of which stands Horraon, one of Greece’s most important archaeological landmarks, which, like much of our ancient Greek heritage, has been abandoned by the modern Greek state!

Horraon was founded in the 4th century BCE during the reign of Alcetas I. According to primary sources, this is where Olympias and her son Alexander the Great went on voluntary exile when things between her and Philip became more tumultuous in 337 BCE.

At the time, Philip had married a noble Macedonian woman, Cleopatra, the niece of Attalus, and at a gathering following the marriage, Philip failed to defend Alexander’s claim to the Macedonian throne when Attalus challenged his legitimacy. As a result, great tensions developed between Philip, Olympias, and Alexander.

Ancient Horraon or Horreum or Orraon is one of the least known sites in Greece however it is one of the ancient sites with a great historical value. This ancient site is located in the region of Epirus in Greece. Next to the village of Ammotopos.

Here is where our forefathers were profoundly engaged in agriculture through the centuries. At this exact area that lies in the shade of Ancient Horraon. And they followed the steps of their ancestors. Generation after generation. They used land-cultivation practices and methods that protected the soil.

They protected and conserved the diverse plant and animal life in their environment. And they were always conscious of the need to leave the land healthy and fertile for future generations. Practices that have recently gained prominence in the agricultural industry.

As a result, our generation now has the opportunity to continue their work with pride and respect, based on their values and sacrifices.
